Our nutritionist Laura Hoey was out on the road recently visiting our RED MILLS Ambassador, international dressage rider Nikki Crisp. It is all go at Team Crisp’s Newmarket base with the construction of a brand new indoor arena along with the regular dressage training clinics that take place.
While Laura assessed her horse’s condition and diet plans, Nikki took a few minutes out of her busy day of riding and training to chat to the RED MILLS team about her team of horses and her career to date.
First Riding Memory
My first riding memory would be coming last in a pony club gymkhana because the game involved chewing an éclair and I wanted mine to last longer!
First Pony’s Name
Being involved in the 2012 London Olympics
Greatest Riding Influence
I have been lucky enough to train with some incredible people however my current German trainer Hans Schmiedler has competed internationally in both show jumping and dressage, and has influenced my riding technique more than anyone with his broad and open minded exercises from both disciplines
Favourite Way to Unwind
We have just bought a new property so any spare time I love spending at home with my fiancé Will and our two dogs Jack and Jill.
Three Dream Dinner Guests
Hugh Jackman – why wouldn’t you, he would be lovely to look at!
Sean Locke – the comedian, he would be great for dinner time banter
Harry Potter – he might have a magic solution to the odd problem with flying changes or piaffe steps!
Childhood Hero (equine or otherwise)
Carl Hester was always my idol growing up, I even named my cactus after him.
Nikki’s Champion Dressage Horses
This season we have are a number of dressage horses competing at different levels.
Pasoa is 17h Grand Prix mare who I have owned since a five year old and trained to Grand Prix myself. In 2012 Pasoa and I represented GB on two Nations Cup teams in Rotterdam and Aachen, was shortlisted for the Olympic Games and ended up performing as the test rider at the London 2012 Olympics.

Beau de la Bryere (Blackie)
Blackie is nine year old gelding competing at Advanced Medium. I have owned him since he was four. He’s an incredibly athletic horse with a temperament to die for. He is effortless to watch with incredible presence and has all the attributes to make a top class horse. He walks for a ten, has a naturally uphill carriage and shows huge ability to both extend and collect. He’s begun his competition career this summer at Medium/Advanced Medium and will PSG in 2016.
Danny is a 17.2 seven year old stallion that is competing at Advanced Medium level. I own him with Viv Gleave.
Forever Young (Yogi)
Yogi is a 16.2 bay gelding is nine years old and owned by Anne King.
Even Song (Eve)
Eve is a 16.3 six year old chestnut mare competing at Novice/Elementary which I own with Anne King.
Hector is a 16h six year old liver chestnut gelding who is now competing at Elementary level owned by myself and C Bushnell.
We would like to thank Nikki for her time and wish her and her team the best of luck with the new yard in Newmarket.
