After four thrilling qualifiers held at venues across Ireland, one of the main highlights of this year’s Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, The Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 Year Old International competition, gets underway on Wednesday at the RDS.
This is the third year that Connolly’s RED MILLS have sponsored this prestigious International competition, which features the top twenty combinations from Ireland, who are then joined at the Dublin Horse Show by up to twenty-four additional International entries from around the world.
The full list of International entries was confirmed this week by the RDS, with riders from nine different nations set to line out in the Connolly’s RED MILLS sponsored class, including one of the sport’s most famous names, Ludger Beerbaum, who will ride the eight year old Cornet Obolensky stallion “Colestus” in the feature event.
Speaking this week, Connolly’s RED MILLS Sales and Marketing Director Gareth Connolly said,
“We are really looking forward to what promises to be a very exciting five days of jumping at the RDS and I am especially delighted to see such a strong list of International entries in the Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 Year Old International competition and I would like to wish all of the competitors the very best of luck. This year our Connolly’s RED MILLS stand at the RDS will be in the Simmonscourt arena and we look forward to meeting our existing and new customers and our staff will be at hand throughout the week to offer advice on feeding horses of all levels”.
French-men Rodger Yves Bost and Jerome Hurel, Germany’s Philipp Weishaupt, Sweden’s Malin Baryard Johnsson and Henrick Von Eckerman, Leopold Van Asten and Vincent Voorn from the Netherlands, along with Katherine Dinan from the USA are just some of the International super-stars set to do battle, against a host of Irish riders that includes Greg Broderick, Ger O Neill and Cian O Connor.
Last year saw German rider Rolf Moormann and Valeska 96 crowned Connolly’s RED MILLS International 7 & 8 Year Old champions at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, with Irish rider Eddie Moloney runner up with MHS Prime while third place went to Tipperary’s Greg Broderick with MHS Going Global.
The Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 Year Old International competition kicks off at 6.30 pm on Wednesday in the Simmonscourt Arena in the RDS, with the first of two qualifiers for the grand final. The seven year old horses will jump first over a 1m 35 course before the fences are raised to 1m 40 for the eight year olds.
The 7 & 8 year-old horses will get their first taste of the RDS main arena on Friday for the second qualifier at 11am, just before the teams line out in the Furusiyya Nations Cup for the famous Aga Khan Trophy.
The top 50% of horse and rider combinations will then go forward to Sunday’s prestigious Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 Year Old International Final at 10.30am in the RDS main arena, where a two round competition including a jump-off, will decide the overall winner.
Along with a very generous prize-fund, the owner of the winning Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 Year Old horse will receive The “John Higgins” Memorial Perpetual Challenge Trophy, while The “Corry” Perpetual Challenge Trophy will be presented to the rider of the winning horse.
