The Irish Show Jumping team go into today’s (Wednesday) second day of competition at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy in seventh position overall, just under one fence behind leaders France, thanks to a stunning performance from 19 year old Bertram Allen from Wexford.
The Enniscorthy teenager leads the individual standings, following a breathtaking win in Tuesday’s opening speed competition with the grey mare Molly Malone V, beating the best horses and riders from 53 nations.
Ireland’s other team members, Tipperary’s Denis Lynch, Mayo’s Cameron Hanley and Offaly’s Darragh Kenny also jumped clear rounds, to leave the Irish team in a strong position at this stage.
The show jumping World Championship team medals will be decided on Thursday, with the top five teams gaining automatic qualification for the Rio Olympic Games, while the individual Show Jumping World Champion will be crowned in Normandy on Sunday.
