The full list competitors have been confirmed for the highly-anticipated Longines Global Champions Tour of Shanghai – round four of the 2014 official FEI series. The line-up is full of Olympic, World, Regional and National Champions from all over the globe, all determined to get their hands on the Grand Prix winner’s 40 Championship points and the major share of the record US$1.1 million prize money. For the first time, these world-class riders will be competing for the top equestrian accolades in mainland China with their own world-class horses.
Irish owned company, Connolly’s RED MILLS have been announced as the “Official Horse Feed Supplier” for the Shanghai leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour, which will be held at the China Art Palace from 6 – 8 June 2014.
The list of elite riders travelling to Shanghai includes three from Ireland, Billy Twomey and Shane Breen, who are both part of the Team RED MILLS Show Jumping squad, will make the trip to China along with seventeen year old super-star Bertram Allen from Wexford.
Heading up the star-studded list for this historic landmark event in Shanghai, is four-time Olympic Gold medallist and World No3 Ludger Beerbaum (GER) – a legend of the sport and always a tough man to beat, Beerbaum will be the likely favourite heading into Saturday’s feature Grand Prix. Last year’s 2013 LGCT Championship runner-up, Christian Ahlmann (GER) – Olympic Bronze medallist and five-time European medallist – will be fighting hard in China to claim top points for his overall LGCT Ranking after coming so close to taking the crown last season.
Lying second in the LGCT Ranking, Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA) has been the rising star of the 2014 season so far, and has proved himself a real contender for another great result as the Tour make it’s first ever stop in China in a few weeks time. However, 2011 and 2012 Champion Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) is just one point behind Gaudiano in 3rd and is in prime position to take the overall lead if she continues her strong form through Shanghai.
Edwina Tops-Alexander in Action
Edwina Tops-Alexander is also part of the “RED MILLS Ambassadors”, and all Edwina’s horses, including the multi Grand Prix winning gelding Cevo Itot du Chateau, are fed exclusively on Connolly’s RED MILLS horse feeds. Edwina’s horses follow strict diet plans to suit their individual needs formulated by Connolly’s RED MILLS nutritionists at their headquarters in Goresbridge, Kilkenny.
British show jumping powerhouse Michael Whitaker, winner of 11 major championship medals and an Olympic Silver medal, will be joined in China by his fellow countryman 2013 European Team Gold medallist William Funnell. The British riders continue to show fantastic form internationally, and both Whitaker and Funnell could well land themselves on an LGCT podium once again in Shanghai.
French icon Kevin Staut, World and European Silver medallist and former European Champion, has been frequently knocking on the door of another big Tour win since his LGCT Monaco victory in 2012 – Shanghai could well be his place to shine. 2014 Dutch Champion, Olympic Silver medallist and 2014 LGCT Madrid winner Maikel van der Vleuten has been on sparkling form heading into this big test in Shanghai. After clinching the Madrid Grand Prix, Round Two of the 2014 season, Van der Vleuten looks like he’s the one to beat as the world’s best riders prepare for this momentous China event.
Other big names competing include, Luciana Diniz (POR), Harrie Smolders (NED), Marco Kutscher (GER), Marc Houtzager (NED), Luca Moneta (ITA), Pius Schwizer (SUI), Abdullah Sharbatly (KSA) and Constant van Paesschen (BEL).
